Woodland Wander Table Runner Tutorial

We love to find ways to make our patterns in different ways. Recently, we were picked to be Ruby Star Makers for one of our favorite fabric companies, Ruby Star Society. We made this table runner with their Jolly Darlings fabric (affiliate link*), and we thought we would show you how to make your own!

You will need a copy of our Woodland Wander pattern to make the tree blocks. Finished size of the table runner is 22″ x 54″. Here are the fabric requirements:

  • 12 – 10″ squares
  • 6 – 5″ x 9″ rectangles
  • 1/3 yard binding
  • 1 yard backing
  • batting

First, use the 10″ squares to make twelve tree blocks. Here are some good combinations for pairing fabric: light/dark colors and small/large scale. Depending on the fabric you are using, try to get a good variety of colors while keeping a cohesive theme.

Once all of your tree blocks are made, it’s time to figure out the table runner layout. Each column of the table runner has two tree blocks and a 5″ x 9″ rectangle. The columns alternate direction so that part of it is always right side up from either side of the table. Here’s a full photo of our table runner so that you can see how we laid it out.

Sew each column of two trees and a rectangle together, then sew all the columns together. With the top of the table runner done, it’s time to quilt it. With small projects like this, we prefer to use our domestic machines, rather than load up the long arm.

For the backing, you may have to piece it a little bit. We only had 1 yard of backing fabric, so we just cut a piece a couple of inches wider than the table runner, then pieced in more fabric until it was long enough. Next, we spray basted all the layers together and quilted straight lines with a walking foot.

Once the quilting is done, trim the sides and cut 4 strips for the binding. We used 2 1/4″ wide binding, but you can also do 2 1/2″ if you prefer. You can reference our machine binding tutorial if you want to see how we do it.

Now your table is ready to greet the holidays in style! You can also check out our other table runner posts here.
