Woodland Wander Quilt Along: Week 3
You’ve made it to Week 3 of the Woodland Wander Quilt Along! Now that all of the cutting is out of the way, it’s time to start putting things back together. If you’re using 10″ squares, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got all of the trees and backgrounds paired up nicely before you start sewing. If you’re using a solid background, you can just stack them all up together and get to it.
When you’re piecing angles, you need to offset the pieces slightly, so that they meet at the seam 1/4″ from the edge. See below.
For the top triangle, you want to line it up with the point sticking out along the bottom edge. There will be some extra background fabric at the top. This creates a little space between the trees, so they’re not sitting right on top of each other.
Continue piecing the tree as outlined in the pattern.
One little tip that will help is to press the horizontal seams of the trees open. This will be nice when we’re putting the whole quilt top, because it will mean that any block can go in any place in the quilt layout. We like to backstitch seams that we know will be pressed open, as they tend to come undone easier.
Finish piecing all of the tree blocks, and you will be done for this week!
Weekly Giveaway
This week’s giveaway is so good, and it’s only open to our quilt-alongers! We’re so lucky to be sponsored by both OLFA and Art Gallery Fabrics this week. One winner will get a BRAND NEW True Blue OLFA Splash Rotary Cutter + Art Gallery Color Master Box in Emerald Stone!
Wouldn’t those greens make an amazing Woodland Wander forest?!? We have been using our new True Blue OLFA cutters for a few weeks now, and they have become the favorites.
To enter the quilt along giveaway this week, you can only enter by posting a photo of your progress on your Instagram page, using the hashtag #woodlandwanderquiltalong. You DO NOT need to be caught up with everything, just show us where you are! If your Instagram account is private, we won’t be able to see your photo. Also, this prize is open to US and Canada entries only, because of prohibitive shipping costs. You have until midnight MST on Sunday, June 23rd to post your photo. Good luck, and get sewing!
Well I’m pretty behind but plodding along. Only have 13 of 42 blocks made (and not all angles cut on my fabric for 3 trees each yet either…brutally honest!). I really struggled piecing the angles together with the point overhang, ripped out several and tried again. Not sure I’m consistent at it yet even. Hopefully it will all work out HA! Decided to get back in to a hobby for me after being out of it for a while.
We’re proud of you for sticking with it! It does take some practice to get those angles to play nicely. This week’s task is a lot less time-consuming, so you’ll have time to catch up!
Do you have a video tutorial on sewing the angles? I have been trying to figure it out for weeks now and it’s just not working. I recently had a few other quilter friends also try it and no one could figure it out. What are the tricks?!?
We don’t have a video right now, but we are planning to start adding them. You can also send us a message through the form on our Contact page for personalized help through email!
