Woodland Wander Quilt Along: Week 2
Welcome to Week 2 of the Woodland Wander Quilt Along! This week, we will get into the pattern and really start working on the quilt top. This is the only other part of the pattern that is different depending on the version of the quilt you are making. We’ll start with the original Layer Cake Version.
Layer Cake Version
For the layer cake version, the cutting is quite straight forward, because all the squares are done the same way. You may find it helpful to pair the squares with contrasting fabrics before you make the cuts. This will ensure a good overall look if you get everything paired beforehand.
You’ll also want to make sure your squares are fairly close to 10″ x 10″. Precuts don’t always turn out exactly square, so it can be helpful to trim beforehand if you don’t want to worry about dealing with it later.
See how these ones aren’t quite square? It is certainly possible to make the quilt without squaring up the precuts, but if you are a beginner this extra 1/4″ could cause problems down the road.
With the two squares stacked on top of each other, cut the three strips using the measurements in the pattern.
Use a quilting ruler with a 60 degree mark to make the angled cuts. Refer to the diagram in the pattern for the placement of these cuts.
Once all the cuts are done, swap the tree fabrics so the tree and background are different.
These pieces are now ready to sew together! Repeat the process with all of the squares, and then you will be ready for next week. Don’t forget to check out the giveaway details at the bottom of this post.
Solid Background Version
If you’re making the quilt with a solid background, the cut pieces end up the same as the layer cake version, but we go about it in a different way. We always start by cutting out the background strips for the whole quilt all at once. You can also cut the strips into the smaller pieces at any point. Refer to the pattern for measurements.
Next, decide which fat quarters you will use for 3 trees and which you will use for 4 trees. You will want a good variety of lights and darks in each group, as they will be used in rows together.
Cut the fat quarters into 3 3/8″ strips along the longest side. Each strip will yield one tree. (For the top piece, you can trim it down to the smaller width before cutting the triangle, or just cut it and it will line itself up if you measure against the bottom edge.)
Cut the strips into pieces, and then cut the angles of the edges, as shown in the pattern.
This is what the top piece will look like if you don’t trim the strip to the smaller width.
Repeat these steps with the background pieces, cutting the angles in reverse image.
Cut all of the fat quarter and background pieces, and then you’ll be ready for next week! Read below for information on this week’s giveaway.
