Make This: The Afternoon Skirt Tutorial
Today’s post is from Cami of our Creative Team. She’s the brains behind some of the most popular tutorials on our blog: The Prairie Pinwheel Baby Quilt, the Little Pouch, and the Striped Baby Bib, to name a few. Here’s what she has for us today!
This skirt is a fun way to showcase several fabrics and super fast to sew together. It would even be cute with just two alternating fabrics. I had enough fabric to make two skirts. How cute would it be to whip a bunch of matching skirts for spring if you had a family of 2 or 3 girls?
-¼ yard (long quarters, not fat quarters) of 7 different fabrics. I used fabric from Peacock Garden, Posy, Enchant.
-½ yard for band at the bottom and the waist band. I used Gypsy Girl.
-¾ inch elastic
Cut strips 4½ inches wide from the 7 different fabrics, then cut the strips to the length you would need. I make mine 14½ inches long. You can totally stack and whack this process to save time.
Cut 2 strips 5 inches wide from the band fabric.
Sew together and iron in half the long ways for the bottom band.
Cut a 2¼” strip from the band fabric for the waist band. My daughter has a 21 inch waist and I made the band 36 inches long.
Sew strips together in an alternating sequence. I repeated my sequence 2 ½ times, so I used 17 strips. Trim across the strips at the top and bottom to make sure edges are even. It makes it easier to sew the bottom band and waist band.
Press seams to one side and top stitch seams down. This gives the skirt a nice finished look.
With raw edges together, sew bottom band to the bottom of the row of strips. Cut off any excess band fabric.
Press the band seam down and top stitch.
Sew a gathering stitch across the top of the strips. Gather it to accommodate the length of the waistband.
Sew the waistband on the top of the strips. Press seam down and top stitch as before.
Iron the top edge down about 1″ and sew in place. Feed the elastic through (you don’t have to leave an opening like the photo since both ends are still open), and sew a little stitch across the ends of the elastic to the ends of the the band to hold it in place.
Sew up the side of the skirt, taking care to line up the waistband and the bottom band to make it look continuous.
All done!

So cute! Wouldn’t this be perfect for spring and summer? Our favorite part about this is that you could make this skirt in any size and color combo.
So cute. Thanks!

Very pretty skirt, thank you for the tutorial. Looks easy peasy!
This is a very pretty skirt and will make good use of my many remnants. My grand daughter will love it.
