Piece & Love Quilt Along: Week 3

Welcome to Week Three of the Piece & Love Quilt Along! By now, all of the pieces of your quilt should be cut out. This week, we will start sewing the blocks that make up the heart together.

First off, you will want to lay all of the triangles out in the heart shape. This is easiest done on a design wall or board. We covered large insulation boards with batting for ours. Start laying out one color at a time, referring to the diagram. The placements don’t have to be exact, but you want to avoid having the same fabrics sharing a side.

To get a nice gradient effect, keep similar colors grouped together. This will also give you a strong overall shape. Notice that we have a few extra triangles toward the bottom that won’t need to be used. We like to cut the same amount of all colors at the start, so we have the flexibility to put any color in any part of the heart.

Once you have finalized your heart layout, we recommend taking a picture of the layout with your phone or camera so you know where everything goes.

Start sewing the blocks together in halves. We love to chain piece to save time and thread. Stack them up and sew one right after another.

We don’t always press our seams open, but for this quilt, we highly recommend it. This will reduce seam bulk, and you won’t have to remember which direction to press.

Sew the halves of each block together, using background triangles where noted in the pattern. Press seams open.

After sewing the blocks together, square them up so they’re all the same size.

This week, sew and square up all of the heart blocks. You can end anywhere from step 4-9 in the pattern, depending on your schedule this week.

Next week, we will finish sewing the whole quilt top together, so keep that in mind when you’re deciding where to stop this week.
