Make This: Patchwork Lanyard Tutorial
For today’s tutorial, we’re going to show you how to make these cute patchwork lanyards, which we used to hold our badges last month at Quilt Market. These are so quick to make, plus it’s a great way to using scraps or mini charm packs. Wanna make one, or two or three?
Here’s what you’ll need:
-Mini Charm Pack , or (17) 2.5″ squares
-Swivel Hook or Latch
Make sure that the swivel hook has an opening that is at least 1.25″ long if you don’t want the loop to be bunched up.For the lanyard, line up 16 squares in the order you want them, then pick one square for the loop on the end.Sew the squares together with a 1/4″ seam. Press seams open to reduce bulk later on.Fold in half lengthwise, with right sides together, and sew down the length, leaving the ends open.Put a safety pin on an end to help turn the lanyard inside out. Try not to stretch the seams too much as you turn it.
Press everything flat.Topstitch down both sides of the lanyard, about 1/8″ from the edges.Put the lanyard around your neck, and bring both ends together, lining them up one on top of another. Pin together.Sew the ends together in a (relatively) straight line. Trim ends. For the hook loop, fold the square in half, and sew down one side.Turn inside out, and tuck each end in, so no raw edges are showing.Place one side over the end of the lanyard. It will be a tight fit.Fold the loop over, with the hook end in.
Sew across the edge of the loop, catching both ends of the loop.
That’s it! Be prepared to get lots of compliments on your pretty new patchwork lanyard. We know we did!
