Make This: Half-Square Triangle Diamonds Quilted Pillow Cover
Remember the leftover corners from the blocks of the Snowball Fight quilt tutorial? Today’s pillow features those little bonus blocks in a stunning radiating diamond pattern.
For this pillow cover, you’ll need:
- 100 Half-Square Triangle (HST) units, unfinished size 2.25″. If you made the bonus HST’s from the Snowball Fight Quilt, these will be the perfect size. If not, check out our HST tutorial.
- Fat Quarter backing fabric, for quilting pillow front
- Batting to fit (scraps work great for this!)
- 1/2 yard pillow backing fabric
- Fat Quarter binding fabric
Lay out all of the HST’s in the pattern shown below.
Sew the blocks into rows, then sew the rows together. It’s fairly straightforward, but you can refer to our HST tutorial for more details.
Once the pillow front is pieced, layer the front, batting, and backing and quilt it all together. We did straight line quilting with a walking foot, 1/8″ away from the radiating diamonds.
After the front is pieced, cut the pillow back into two pieces. Fold each piece in half again, and top stitch along the folded edge. This will create two pieces on the back that will fold over each other for the opening. Check out our Pumpkin Quilted Pillow Tutorial for more details on the pillow back and binding!
We used the same binding method for this pillow that we did on the Double Halo Quilted Pillow. We talk through it on that post, but we’re thinking it needs a tutorial of its own soon.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this little bonus project! There are still more HST’s left from that Snowball Fight Quilt, so maybe next year they will turn into something else. For now, we’re ready to leave holiday projects behind and look forward to the new year! We’re planning a Candy Shoppe Quilt-Along in the coming weeks, so stay tuned on announcements for that!
What a great idea, I’ve saved those corner pieces and have never used them.
What a wonderful idea for the end scraps. I always felt bad for the waste, but now I can turn them into a coordinating pillow to go with the quilt.
Thank you for the great idea. JA
