Make This: Double Crossed Quilt Block Tutorial
We have a fun new quilt block tutorial for you today! Say hello to the Double Crossed Block. It’s an upsized version of the Christmas Plus quilt block that we designed for Moda Bake Shop, finishing at 12.5″ square (12″ square once pieced into a quilt). We also added that little pop of red on the ends of the plus for that extra bit of color.
Cut List
- Plus (Light Blue): (2) 2.5″ x 3.5″, (1) 2.5″ x 8.5″
- Cross (Navy): (4) 5.5″ squares
- Plus Ends (Red): (4) 2.5″ squares
- Background (Tan): (8) 3″ squares
We used Tall Tales fabric by Arleen Hillyer for Birch Fabrics. It’s probably out of print, since we picked it up last time we went to Quilt Market in 2017. (Has it really been that long?!?) You might be able to score some on Etsy or Ebay, though!
Using a 1/4″ seam, start by sewing the 2.5″ red squares to the ends of the light blue plus pieces, as shown above. Press toward the darker fabric.
Draw a diagonal line on the back side of all of the background squares. Sew the tan background squares to the 5.5″ navy cross squares along all of the drawn lines.
Trim the corners, leaving a 1/4″ seam allowance past the sewn line.
Open the corner pieces and press flat. Repeat with all corner pieces.
Sew the corner pieces to either side of the shorter plus pieces to make three rows.
Once the rows are sewn and pressed, sew the rows together.
Press one final time, and there’s your completed Double Crossed Quilt Block!
Isn’t it great? We love how it turned out. These blocks would make great quilts of any size. We would love to know: what are you going to make?
