Inspiration: Little Playmates Finished Quilts

Little Playmates Quilt detailThese sweet little Playtime Quilts are finished at last, and now they are on the beds in the bunkroom.  It has taken ten years to collect all of the fabric on a theme, get them pieced, sashed, bordered, quilted, and bound, but they really brighten up the room.Little Playmates Quilt 2

If I had measured, I would have realized that the size (60″ x 72″) is a little small for a twin bed.  Larger borders would have been a good idea, but that ship sailed so we love what we have.Little Playmates Quilt 1

We used our new curvy and circle rulers on the Handiquilter to quilt scallops on the border, circles between squares, and a four petal flower in the center of each square.Little Playmates Quilt detail 2This takes some practice, but it makes perfect curves and circles.Quilting detail

This little lamp already had a shade made from one of the matching toy prints–a project that was actually finished ten years ago in preparation for the quilts.  Love to plan ahead.Lamp

The binding was made from the same Joel Dewberry fabric as the borders, and the backing is Riley Blake’s Sidewalks in flannel.  We were planning to sew the binding onto the quilt front and finish it on the back by hand, because of the color/value difference in the binding and backing fabric.  Time crunch + two quilts = try to do this by machine.Backing and bindingWe were very careful to topstitch the binding to the quilt front inside of the binding line on the back, so that the blue thread didn’t stray onto the light flannel.  It took a little more time to be so careful, but it worked like a dream and was still much faster than hand work.BunkroomNow this room is complete and ready for Grandma’s sweeties to have a sleepover!signature
