Inspiration: Doll Backpack
One of Audrey’s daughters is both creative and persistent. This results in many tiny sewing projects for this daughter’s favorite stuffed toy, Piglet. Recently, it was decided that Piglet needed a backpack, to go along with his bathrobe, pajamas, sleeping bag, and quilt (shown below).
It began with a hot pink Cotton + Steel fat quarter from the Printshop line that she picked out at our local quilt shop, My Girlfriend’s Quilt Shoppe. From that fabric, a sketch emerged, complete with a fabric swatch and three different views. Pattern maker in training, right there.
We looked around the internet for some inspiration and found this American Girl doll backpack here. It was the only thing that was pretty close to the sketch. There is a pattern for it that you can buy, but since Piglet is a little smaller than a doll, we figured we could just wing it. Kids don’t care if it’s perfect, right?
Using a 7″ zipper and the photos from the blog post we linked earlier, this thing came together relatively quickly.
There are a few little issues with it here and there, since it’s mostly a prototype, but overall it turned out pretty great! Sewing small objects is always tricky for us.
Since this is a dimensional object, there were also many more pins involved than is usual with our sewing projects.
This spoiled little pig is ready for Kindergarten!
Since there are three girls in Audrey’s family, we’re already scheduled to make two more of these. The first one’s always the hardest, right? Leave us a comment if you’d like us to make a proper tutorial or mini pattern when we make the next ones, and be sure to let us know what you think while you’re at it. This is so cute. I’d love to make them for my grand daughters’
babies so if you do a tutorial it would be wonderful

Thanks for your input! We are thinking that we may be able to do it in the next couple of months.
The backpack is so cute. My granddaughter will love this if you make a tutorial. Make cute Christmas gift too!
Thank you! These would be a fun gift. We are thinking that we will be able to do the tutorial sometime in the next couple of months.
Oh my gosh. You little girl looks just like you and now she’s following in your footsteps by sewing and designing her own little projects. This is so sweet. Not only is the back pack really neat but piglet is darling. Is this your pattern? If so, could you please do a tutorial on Piglet and the back pack?
Thanks and kudos to you for passing on the art of sewing to the next generation.
Thank you! She is a cute little gal, and we are glad to share our love of sewing with her and our other little ones. The stuffed Piglet was actually purchased at Walmart when she was born. That’s not very helpful, is it? We are planning to do the backpack tutorial in the next couple of months, though!
