Make This: Crazy Quilt Heart Pincushion Tutorial
Jazz up your mood for Valentine’s Day with this great crazy quilted heart pincushion/scissor holder!
Materials needed:
- 10″ x 10″ red cotton fabric
- 33″ fancy ribbon
- small pair of embroidery scissors
- wool felt pieces in white, pink and reds
- ribbon rose
- heart button
- stuffing
- cool stitches on your sewing machine, or embroidery thread and a needle
Cut 2 heart shapes from your red fabric, about 4 1/2″ x 5 1/4“, or large enough for your scissors. Fold in half to make sure the shape is even.
Cut a smaller heart (same fabric or different–it won’t really show) about 3″ x 3 1/2″, or so that it will fit onto the larger heart.
Cut the ribbon to 33″ and set aside.
Begin laying the wool scraps over the top of the smaller heart until you have a pleasing arrangement. We began with the white in the center and worked our way to the outside from light to dark shades.
Sew the first wool color over one side of the white center with a fancy stitch. This can also be done by hand with embroidery floss.
Add the second piece of felt and choose another stitch and sew across both pieces. As you add more colors, you will want to trim out the excess wool.
Once all of the wool is sewn onto the cotton fabric, sew around the outside of the heart with a straight stitch to stabilize the shape. Trim the outside shape with pinking shears, making sure not to clip your stitching line.
Place the felt heart pocket onto the right side of one large heart shape and sew the sides and bottom, leaving the top open for a pocket. Back stitch each edge to hold securely.
Now, add the ribbon. With the right side of the ribbon facing the right side of the heart, tack the ribbon to the top of the heart, slightly to the left of the “v”.
Place the other heart, right sides facing, over the top and sew them together, leaving a 1 1/2 – 2″ opening. This can get tricky if your ribbon gets caught in the seam–just pull it to where the opening is and let it stay there.
Clip the “v”, point and curves.
Turn right side out and admire.
Stuff with fluffy filling, not too floppy or too full, but just right. Whip stitch the opening closed.
Fold the other end of the ribbon over twice and place one scissor handle in the folded loop.
Sew a heart shaped button on to hold the scissors, be sure to sew through all layers of the folded ribbon.
Put the ribbon around your neck and tuck the scissors into the cute pocket until they are needed. Your pins and needles can go right into the cushion.
As an afterthought, we added a ribbon rose to the center of the heart pocket.
This is a great way to keep scissors at hand, while the pocket protects one from that occasional pointy scissor stab. And keeping pins and needles out of the carpet and furniture is a great way to spread the love!
