Basement Kitchen Makeover
This basement kitchen had a lot of potential, but the cabinets were leaving me cold. Originally, they were a natural stained birch that had been painted by previous owners. I had painted them a warmer white, but since they cover the better part of two walls they really needed help. My idea was to liven them up with some interesting texture and color. My husband (sweet guy that he is) removed the doors and routed grooves at different intervals to make them look like cottage style tongue in groove panels. He measured each door and planned the spacing so it would look good when they were put back together.
I painted the top cabinets a shade or two lighter green than the bottom cabinets with Ace cabinet paint. I also painted the dresser where I store fabric so it looks more built-in. It is really hard to tell there is a difference in color, but since there isn’t any natural light in this room it anchors the lower bank. A plug here for this paint–it has the primer mixed in– which made this process so much easier since I was painting over oil based paint.
I made matching fabric curtains to cover the open shelves in the corner, the door into the storage room and the closet under the stairs. The original foam tile ceiling was removed and sheets of cedar lattice were hung to blend in with the floor/ceiling joists.
Then I sprayed the cabinet hardware with Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint. This paint is the best thing–I have used it to update just about everything from cabinet hardware to light fixtures to toys to furniture.
This room is just off of my sewing room so I spend a lot of time in here serging, ironing, washing and choosing fabrics. Now I love the way it looks! The mural over the sink is from a vacation photo taken at Cascade Lake in McCall Idaho. Good times.
Thanks for coming along on the basement kitchen makeover tour. Next time will be an exciting visit to the sewing room!
