Aspen Groves Quilt

You all know we are huge suckers for tree quilts.  We know that a lot of you are, too, because our best selling pattern is Woodland Wander.  This quilt kit has been in our stash and WIP (work-in-progress) pile for a couple of years, so it’s high time it got its day in the sun.

This quilt was made from a foundation paper piecing pattern, called “The Grove” by Amanda Herring of The Quilted Fish.  Unfortunately, it’s no longer available anywhere that we can find.

This quilt did come as a kit, but we did a little bit of swapping of fabrics, per our usual.  We traded out an orange background in favor of the light green, ditched the inner border, and picked a new print for the outer (or only in our case) border.

We can understand why this isn’t available anymore, since we ran out of white fabric halfway through, and we were shy on the border and had to find a spare fat quarter on Etsy to supplement. 

For Audrey’s first paper pieced quilt, it did turn out quite well.  There were accompanying videos that helped out with that process.  For the backing, we used the Pastry Shop Neutral Spanish tiles print from the From Porto with Love fabric line.  Binding is another Cotton + Steel print from the Rotary line, found in our personal stash.

We had a ton of fun quilting this one, adding grass at the bottom of the blocks, and wood grain and leaves in the trees.  In the border, we did broderie perse-style quilting, which is one of our favorite techniques where you loosely outline the fabric design.

We’re so glad to finally be working our way through the WIP pile.  Although, it does seem to always replenish itself.  Next week, we have a beautiful spring-inspired porch pillow that you won’t want to miss!
